Refrigeration and air conditioning appliances (RAC) are rapidly spreading across Africa. As the electricity in most African countries is still generated through burning of fossil fuels, increased demand for energy results in increased greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. With the use of highly energy efficient refrigeration and air conditioning devices and the substitution of high global warming potential (GWP) refrigerants with low GWP refrigerants and foam blowing substances, both GHG emissions and energy use can be substantially reduced. Alternative technologies are internationally available but not common in Africa. The Green Cooling Africa Initiative aims at establishing a prototype best practice approach for Ghana, Kenya, Mauritius, and Namibia. 배경
냉방 가전이 아프리카에 급속히 보급되고 있다. 대부분의 아프리카 지역의 전력은 화석연료의 연소로 생성되기 때문에 에너지 수요의 증가는 온실가스배출량(GHG)의 증가로 이어졌다. 고도로 효율적인 냉방 및 냉장 기기의 사용과 지구온난화 위험(GWP)이 높은 냉매를 저GWP 냉매로 대체한다면 GHG와 에너지 사용량 모두 상당히 감축시킬 수 있을 것이다. 대체적 기술이 전세계적으로 사용되고 있지만 아프리카에서는 드물다. 그린 쿨링 아프리카 이니셔티브는 가나, 케냐, 모리셔스, 나미비아에 적합한 우수관행을 구축하고자 한다.
