제목 Countries to Present Updates on Their Pre-2020 Climate Actions at COP24

Against the backdrop of decreased emissions by developed countries between 1990 and 2016, smaller groups of both developing and developed countries will transparently present updates on their climate actions in the period before 2020.

The so-called Multilateral Assessment (MA) and the Facilitative Sharing of Views (FSV) give developed and developing countries the opportunity to present their progress in implementing actions to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in the period before 2020.

Patricia Espinosa, the UN’s Climate Chief said: “I am really encouraged by countries’ eagerness to share their actions. Both developing and developed countries have indicated that they are looking forward to this opportunity”.

The developing countries that will showcase their efforts to implement climate actions and also share their challenges in this include Andorra, Argentina, Bosnia and Herzegovina, China, Jordan, Lebanon, Mongolia, Namibia, Tunisia and Togo.

The developed countries that will transparently share updates on achieving their 2020 emission reduction targets include the European Union, Canada, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, France, Germany, Czechia, Hungary, Slovakia and the Netherlands.

Both the MA and the FSV open the door for transparent, constructive and positive interaction on climate change policies, actions and solutions.

“Reaping the benefits of transparency, through this process, countries can recognise each other’s success stories and have the possibility to scale up and replicate policies and best practices”, Ms. Espinosa said.

The recently launched UNFCCC compilation and synthesis report on emission reduction measures and support provided by developed countries is providing a positive backdrop to the MA and FSV process at COP24. The report, which synthesizes efforts as communicated by developed countries, finds that between 1990 and 2016, greenhouse gas emissions of developed countries decreased by 13%.

The report also finds that emission reduction measures by developed countries have increased and are paying off. Developed countries are progressing towards their 2020 targets but gaps remain. Nevertheless, for the year 2020, developed countries’ greenhouse gas emissions are projected to be 11% lower than in 1990. Read the key messages of the report here.

The MA and FSV processes have been running at UN Climate Change Conferences since 2014 and give countries the opportunity to exchange openly on their efforts to measure, report and verify emission reductions at the domestic level, their greenhouse gas inventories and their emission reduction measures.

FSV and MA will take place on Monday December 3 and Friday December 7. Further information can be found here

The event with developing countries participating in the process to measure, verify and report their actions, their experiences and lessons learned in this, will take place on Wednesday 5 December, 13:15 to 14:45 in room Bieszczady.

The event on developed countries’ actions and support before 2020, will take place on Thursday 6 December from 13:15 to 14:45 in room Warmia.
