Title Boosting Transparency of Climate Action via the Multilateral Assessment

UN Climate Change News, 2 April 2019 - At the next round of UN climate change talks in Bonn in June of this year, 20 developed countries will present their activities to meet their 2020 climate action targets. Government representatives are encouraged to put questions in advance of the June meeting by 12 April.

Transparency is a key element of effective national and international climate action, and the so-called “Multilateral Assessment” is part of the transparency framework under the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).

This is an important component of increasing climate ambition, crucial to meet the central temperature goal of the Paris Climate Change Agreement, which is to hold the global average temperature rise to as close as possible to 1.5 degrees Celsius and thereby prevent the worst impacts of climate change.

Countries who will be sharing their climate action progress and experiences to meet their pre-2020 climate action targets include the United Kingdom, the Russian Federation, Australia, Japan, Poland and Sweden.

As part of the International Assessment and Review process under the Convention, developed countries prepare reports every two years. These reports are reviewed by a team of qualified technical review experts.

The Multilateral Assessment process allows all 197 Parties to the UNFCCC to ask questions to clarify a country’s actions to curb greenhouse gases and greenhouse gas trends and projections, based on the national reports and their review reports.

The 20 Parties are under the Multilateral Assessment include Australia, Croatia, Cyprus, Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Liechtenstein, Malta, Monaco, Norway, Poland, Romania, Russian Federation, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden and the United Kingdom.

National delegates can pose questions to the Parties under the Multilateral Assessment by 12 April using the information available on our Multilateral assessment page.

In parallel to the UN climate change talks 17 - 27 June, a Facilitative Sharing of Views of developing countries will take place with countries including Brazil, South Korea, Nigeria and Thailand presenting their climate actions.
