Title [UNFCCC] Work Programme on Just Transition Pathways: Workshop Discusses Way Forward at COP28

UN Climate Change News, 1 December 2023 – Earlier this week, more than 130 Parties and observers took part in a workshop to discuss the way forward on the work programme on just transition pathways at COP28.

The work programme on just transition pathways, which was established at COP27 last year, is meant to assess, design and scale up pathways to achieve the goals of the Paris Agreement in a way that is just and equitable for all, and leaves no one behind.

The workshop took place on 27 November, just a few days before the start of the UN Climate Change Conference (COP28) underway now in Dubai. It was a key opportunity for Parties and non-Party stakeholders to better understand each other’s views on the work programme. The workshop also served to help Parties make progress towards a decision at COP28 on how to operationalize the work programme on just transition pathways.

Harry Vreuls, chair of the Subsidiary Body for Scientific and Technological Advice (SBSTA) and Nabeel Munir, Chair of the Subsidiary Body for Implementation (SBI) opened the event followed by a discussion moderated by the SBSTA Vice-Chair, Nathalie Flores, and the SBI Vice-Chair, Gonzalo Guaiquil.

The work programme is expected to be implemented in a way that builds on and complements the relevant workstreams under the Convention and the Paris Agreement, including the work programme for urgently scaling up mitigation ambition and implementation.

The Chairs of the SBSTA and SBI closed the event by highlighting the importance of the workshop as it helped advance progress ahead of COP28, with a view to recommending a draft decision on the work programme for consideration and adoption here in Dubai.
