Seoul, Republic of Korea, July 29, 2025 — The People’s Democratic Republic of Algeria has formally submitted its Instrument of Accession to become the 52nd Member State of the Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI), marking a significant milestone in the country’s efforts to promote sustainable development and inclusive green growth. By joining GGGI, Algeria affirms its commitment to advancing a low-carbon, climate-resilient, and socially inclusive development model. This step reflects Algeria’s strategic vision to diversify its economy, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and strengthen environmental stewardship in line with its national and international climate commitments. H.E. Lyes Nait Tighilt, Ambassador of Algeria to the Republic of Korea, stated: “Algeria’s accession to GGGI reflects our strong commitment to sustainable development and the transition toward a green economy. We believe that international cooperation and the exchange of knowledge and experience are essential to achieving our shared goals. Through a strong and mutually beneficial partnership with GGGI, Algeria aims to strengthen its global expertise in support of its national strategies focused on water security, green hydrogen, and renewable energy—while also contributing meaningfully to regional and global climate change solutions.” “Algeria’s membership is a meaningful step forward for green cooperation in the Middle East and North Africa(MENA) region,” said Gerard O’Donoghue, Deputy Director-General of GGGI. “We look forward to working closely with the Algerian government to translate its climate ambitions into concrete results—through green investment, technical expertise, and shared innovation.” In recent years, Algeria has taken tangible steps to address climate change and environmental degradation. Under its Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) to the Paris Agreement, Algeria has committed to reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 7% using domestic resources, and by up to 22% with international support by 2030. The country is actively pursuing investments in renewable energy, sustainable land use, food and water security, waste management, and a national green hydrogen strategy that positions Algeria as a potential clean energy leader in the region. Algeria’s membership will officially take effect on August 28, 2025, making it the 5th country from the MENA Region to join GGGI, alongside Bahrain, Jordan, Qatar, and United Arab Emirates. Note to EditorsMembership to GGGI is open to any member state of the United Nations or regional integration organization that subscribes to the objectives of the Institute, namely: promoting sustainable development of developing and emerging countries, including the least developed countries, by: supporting and diffusing a new paradigm of economic growth: green growth, which is a balanced advance of economic growth and environmental sustainability; targeting key aspects of economic performance and resilience, poverty reduction, job creation and social inclusion, and environmental sustainability; and creating and improving the economic, environmental and social conditions of countries through partnerships between developed and developing countries and the public and private sectors.
