[GGGI] GGGI Supports Qatar in Validating Climate Adaptation Priorities Through National Stakeholder Workshop |
---|---|
DOHA, QATAR, May 28, 2025- The Ministry of Environment and Climate Change (MECC) and the Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI) Qatar Office hosted a stakeholder validation workshop for Qatar’s National Adaptation Plan (NAP). This workshop brought together over 150 representatives from government, the private sector, academia, and civil society to review and validate adaptation measures, ensuring alignment with national priorities and stakeholder insights. Held in Doha, the workshop served as a major milestone in the country’s efforts to strengthen climate resilience. Qatar faces pressing challenges from climate change, including rising sea levels, water scarcity, extreme heat, and severe events. These issues pose significant threats to key sectors such as energy, water, infrastructure and coastal area, public health, agriculture and livestock; as well as to biodiversity. To address these vulnerabilities, the NAP will integrate climate adaptation strategies into Qatar’s national development plans and support the country’s transition to a sustainable, climate resilient economy. “ The NAP represents one of the main tools, identified by the UNFCCC, allowing countries to enhance their capacities and prepare for climate change impacts. the Qatar NAP comes within this international context and reflects the country’s commitment to the UNFCCC framework. ” said Engineer AbdulAziz Ahmad Al-Mahmoud, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change. Stakeholders engaged in sectoral group work and cross-sectoral “World Café” sessions to evaluate and rank adaptation options using pre-defined criteria. The sessions were technically facilitated by a team of GGGI staff members, and consultants of Water, Environment & Beyond (WE&B) and OCA Global.
“The NAP is more than just a policy d ocument. It is a strategic framework that helps us plan for and respond to climate risks. Developed through a combination of rigorous scientific analysis and inclusive consultations, the NAP ensures that our adaptation efforts are aligned with Qatar National Vision 2030.” said Ms. Charina Cabrido, GGGI Qatar NAP Project Manager. The final ranked adaptation options will inform the completion of Qatar’s National Adaptation Plan, which will guide the country’s climate adaptation actions through 2050 as part of its national strategies and plans for green growth and sustainable development. About the Climate Adaptation Planning Project and NAP: The Climate Adaptation Planning Project in Qatar, part of the MECC-GGGI Cooperation Program on Climate Action and Green Growth, addresses the country’s vulnerability to climate change impacts. By focusing on the most vulnerable sectors, the project aims to safeguard the nation’s economy, population, and coastal areas from climate-related threats. Developing the NAP for the State of Qatar will enable the country to identify and address its medium and long-term priorities for adapting to climate change as part of Qatar’s broader development strategy and green economy transition.
