Sovereign Project | 56045-001

Tripura is a state in North-East India. It is surrounded by Bangladesh on the north, south and west. The 856 km international border makes up 84% of the state border. The rest is shared with the states of Mizoram and Assam. The state is connected with the rest of India by NH-8 (to Silchar, Assam), further connecting to the rest of India via NHAI's East-West corridor and NH-108 (to Aizawl, Mizoram). Tripura is the largest producer of bamboo, the second largest producer of natural rubber, and the fifth largest tea producing state in India. The North-East Economic Corridor Study has also identified growth potential in different sectors and industries in Tripura such as agri-food processing, bamboo, rubber, tourism, and medical tourism.

Description

Roads being the dominant mode of transport in Tripura, development of the road sector is imperative to realize the growth potential of the state. Improvements in the quality of road infrastructure, level of transport services and in bridging critical infrastructure gaps are necessary to meet the multi-prong objectives of enhancing regional connectivity, increasing efficiency of road networks and access to basic social services, addressing road safety, along with ensuring comfort and reliability in road transport. Improved connectivity to the Tripura hinterland would provide vital access to all towns, block headquarters, economic and tourist centers; improve accessibility in the less developed areas of Tripura; and provide the much-needed link with national highways and border towns.

The PRF will support the Government of Tripura (GOT) in the development of a comprehensive road sector investment plan (RSIP), identification of high-priority sub-projects for the ensuing project and enhancement of project readiness by supporting due diligence and other preparatory activities. The PRF will also conduct detailed assessment of institutional strengthening requirements of the Public Works Department (PWD) and develop the capacity development component of the ensuing project. The PRF will deliver three outputs through mobilization of consulting services under the supervision of GOT and in coordination with the PWD, Tripura, and ADB.

Project Rationale and Linkage to Country/Regional Strategy Roads being the dominant mode of transport in Tripura, the PRF will help in development of the road sector by dentification of high-priority sub-projects for the ensuing project and enhancement of project readiness by supporting due diligence and other preparatory activities.
