SBSTA - IPCC Special event: Unpacking the new scientific knowledge and key findings in the Working Group III contribution to the Sixth Assessment report: Mitigation of Climate Change MANDATED AND OTHER EVENTS The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Working Group III (WGIII) contribution the IPCC Sixth Assessment Report (AR6) provides an updated global assessment of climate change mitigation progress and pledges, and examines the sources of global emissions. It explains developments in emission reduction and mitigation efforts, assessing the impact of national climate pledges in relation to long-term emissions goals. The WGIII contribution was composed by 278 authors from 65 countries and benefited from a further 354 contributing authors. Over 18,000 scientific publications were assessed and over 59,000 expert and government review comments provided and addressed. Of all authors of the AR6, 41% came from developing countries and 29% were women. The Working Group III contribution to the Sixth Assessment Report was finalized on 4 April 2022. The SBSTA and IPCC will organise a joint three-hour event during SBSTA 56 to provide a forum for Parties to directly engage with IPCC experts to enhance their understanding of the new knowledge and key findings contained in the WGIII report. This event will be co-chaired by the chairs of the SBSTA and the IPCC. The SBSTA and IPCC Chairs will prepare an information note outlining the purpose of the special event, the proposed agenda and to provide further background information to potential participants.
